WHY OUR WORK MATTERS

Safety and healing should be within reach for every survivor.
Domestic violence affects individuals and families across every community. When money is limited and support is difficult to access, finding safety and rebuilding life can become even more challenging. The Holes Foundation Inc. works to close gaps in support through education, advocacy, peer connection, and resources for survivors and families in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
HOLES stands for Healing Our Legacy Empowering Survivors.
The Need behind Our Work
These national findings show gaps in services and broader challenges facing families with limited financial resources.
13,018 requests for help went unmet in one day
Participating domestic violence programs across the United States could not meet 13,018 requests for assistance because resources, funding, or staffing were insufficient.

8.1 % compared with 3.5 %
In a national survey, 8.1% of children ages 0–17 in families with incomes below 200% of the federal poverty threshold had ever been victims of violence or witnessed violence in their neighborhood, compared with 3.5% in families at or above that income level.

This finding measures neighborhood violence broadly. It is not a measure of domestic violence, unmet services, or the effects of insufficient support.

Understanding the numbers
The first three statistics describe the same 24-hour survey, not separate populations or annual totals. Participating programs represented 85% of identified U.S. domestic violence programs. Requests are not necessarily unique people; one person may need more than one service. These figures describe national needs and are not The Holes Foundation’s service results or Miami-Dade and Broward estimates.
Why Financial Hardship Matters
Domestic violence occurs at every income level. Limited income, unstable housing, and reduced access to services can create additional barriers to safety. CDC identifies community poverty and limited economic opportunities as risk factors, while access to medical and mental health services can help protect communities. Poverty does not excuse abuse or make survivors responsible for it.

How families are affected
Domestic violence and barriers to assistance can affect several parts of family life. Families experience these challenges differently, and recovery is possible with appropriate support.
Safety and housing
Without accessible shelter or affordable housing, survivors may face difficult choices about where they and their children can safely stay.
Health and emotional well being
Survivors may experience depression, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and lasting physical health problems. Access to appropriate care is an important part of recovery.
Financial stability
Abuse can interfere with access to money, employment, and housing. Families with little financial flexibility may find it especially difficult to absorb the costs of seeking safety.
